Washington is a somewhat small borough located in the state of New Jersey. With a population of 7,335 people and two associated neighborhoods, Washington is the 255th largest community in New Jersey. Washington has an unusually large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic boroughs.Unlike some boroughs where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Washington is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Washington is a borough of sales and office workers, professionals, and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Washington who work in office and administrative support (16.65%), management occupations (11.70%), and sales jobs (8.05%). Also of interest is that Washington has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US. Telecommuters are a relatively large percentage of the workforce: 13.07% of people work from home. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce it is high relative to the nation. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes. One downside of living in Washington, however, is that residents on average have to contend with a long commute, spending on average 34.73 minutes every day commuting to work. The overall education level of Washington citizens is substantially higher than the typical US community, as 29.48% of adults in Washington have at least a bachelor's degree, and the average American community has 21.84%. The per capita income in Washington in 2022 was $39,722, which is low income relative to New Jersey, and upper middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $158,888 for a family of four. However, Washington contains both very wealthy and poor people as well. Washington is a very ethnically-diverse borough. The people who call Washington home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Washington residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Washington also has a sizeable Hispanic population (people of Hispanic origin can be of any race). People of Hispanic or Latino origin account for 15.47% of the borough’s residents. Important ancestries of people in Washington include German, Italian, Irish, English, and Polish. In addition, Washington has a lot of people living here who were born outside of the US (18.38%). The most common language spoken in Washington is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and Arabic.
