Cornwall Profile

Overview

Cornwall is a very small town located in the state of Connecticut. With a population of 1,380 people and just one neighborhood, Cornwall is the 168th largest community in Connecticut. Cornwall has an unusually large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic towns.

Cornwall home prices are not only among the most expensive in Connecticut, but Cornwall real estate also consistently ranks among the most expensive in America.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some towns, Cornwall isn’t mainly white- or blue-collar. Instead, the most prevalent occupations for people in Cornwall are a mix of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Cornwall is a town of professionals, service providers, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Cornwall who work in management occupations (12.13%), teaching (10.06%), and art, media, and design (9.17%).

Of important note, Cornwall is also a town of artists. Cornwall has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Cornwall’s character.

Telecommuters are a relatively large percentage of the workforce: 11.73% of people work from home. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce it is high relative to the nation. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Setting & Lifestyle

Another notable thing is that Cornwall is a major vacation destination. Much of the town’s population is seasonal: many people own second homes and only live there part-time, during the vacation season. The effect on the local economy is that many of the businesses are dependent on tourist dollars, and may operate only during the high season. As the vacation season ends, Cornwall’s population drops significantly, such that year-round residents will notice that the city is a much quieter place to live.

In addition, Cornwall is home to many people who could be described as "urban sophisticates". Urban sophisticates are educated, wealthy, executives and professionals, who have urbane tastes in books, food, and travel, whether they actually live in a big city, or choose to reside in a small town. In big or medium-sized cities, urban sophisticates tend to frequent art institutions such as opera, symphonies, ballet, live theatre, and museums.

Because of many things, Cornwall is a very good place for families to consider. With an enviable combination of good schools, low crime, college-educated neighbors who tend to support education because of their own experiences, and a high rate of home ownership in predominantly single-family properties, Cornwall really has some of the features that families look for when choosing a good community to raise children. Is Cornwall perfect? Of course not, and if you like frenetic nightlife, it will be far from your cup of tea. But overall this is a solid community, with many things to recommend it as a family-friendly place to live.

It is a fairly quiet town because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Cornwall has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Cornwall has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Cornwall than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Cornwall may be for you.

In Cornwall, a lot of people use the subway to get to work every day though Cornwall is a relatively small town. Those that ride the subway are primarily traveling out of town to good jobs in other cities.

Cornwall Demographics

Do you like to read, write and learn? If you move to Cornwall, you'll likely find that many of your neighbors like to as well. Cornwall is one of the more educated communities in America, with a full 53.29% of its adults having a college degree or even advanced degree, compared to a national average across all communities of 21.84%.

The per capita income in Cornwall in 2010 was $48,926, which is upper middle income relative to Connecticut, and wealthy relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $195,704 for a family of four. However, Cornwall contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

The people who call Cornwall home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Cornwall residents report their race to be White, followed by Asian. Important ancestries of people in Cornwall include English, German, Italian, and Scottish.

The most common language spoken in Cornwall is English. Other important languages spoken here include French and Polish.
