Chelan Profile

Overview

Chelan is a very small city located in the state of Washington. With a population of 4,060 people and just one neighborhood, Chelan is the 141st largest community in Washington.

Housing costs in Chelan are among some of the highest in the nation, although real estate prices here don't compare to real estate prices in the most expensive communities in Washington.

Occupations and Workforce

Chelan is neither predominantly blue-collar nor white-collar, instead having a mixed workforce of both blue-collar and white-collar jobs. Overall, Chelan is a city of professionals, sales and office workers, and transportation and shipping workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Chelan who work in sales jobs (14.09%), teaching (11.87%), and management occupations (10.01%).

A relatively large number of people in Chelan telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 7.73% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Setting & Lifestyle

Residents will find that the city is relatively quiet. This is because it is not over-populated, and it has fewer college students, renters, and young children - all of whom can be noisy at times. So, if you're looking for a relatively peaceful place to live, Chelan is worth considering.

Compared to the rest of the country, citizens of Chelan spend much less time in their cars: on average, their commute to work is only 15.32 minutes. This also means that noise and pollution levels in the city are less than they would otherwise be.

Chelan is a small city, and as such doesn't have a public transit system that people use to get to and from their jobs every day.

Chelan Demographics

In terms of college education, Chelan is somewhat better educated than the 21.84% who have a 4-year degree or higher in the typical US community: 25.17% of adults 25 and older in the city have at least a bachelor's degree.

The per capita income in Chelan in 2010 was $25,749, which is middle income relative to Washington, and upper middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $102,996 for a family of four. However, Chelan contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

Chelan is a very ethnically-diverse city. The people who call Chelan home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Chelan residents report their race to be White. Chelan also has a sizeable Hispanic population (people of Hispanic origin can be of any race). People of Hispanic or Latino origin account for 30.27% of the city’s residents. Important ancestries of people in Chelan include Norwegian, Irish, Swedish, and English.
