Sour Lake Profile

Overview

Sour Lake is a very small city located in the state of Texas. With a population of 1,773 people and just one neighborhood, Sour Lake is the 652nd largest community in Texas.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some cities where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Sour Lake is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Sour Lake is a city of sales and office workers, construction workers and builders, and professionals. There are especially a lot of people living in Sour Lake who work in office and administrative support (14.60%), sales jobs (13.23%), and management occupations (10.50%).

Setting & Lifestyle

It is a fairly quiet city because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Sour Lake has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Sour Lake has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Sour Lake than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Sour Lake may be for you.

In Sour Lake, however, the average commute to work is quite long. On average, people spend 30.57 minutes each day getting to work, which is significantly higher than the national average.

As is often the case in a small city, Sour Lake doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.

Sour Lake Demographics

The citizens of Sour Lake have a very low rate of college education: just 6.83% of people over 25 have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree, compared to a national average of 21.84% for all cities.

The per capita income in Sour Lake in 2010 was $24,760, which is upper middle income relative to Texas, and middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $99,040 for a family of four. However, Sour Lake contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

The people who call Sour Lake home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Sour Lake residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Important ancestries of people in Sour Lake include Irish, German, English, and Italian.

The most common language spoken in Sour Lake is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and French.
