Unicoi Profile

Overview

Unicoi is a very small town located in the state of Tennessee. With a population of 3,561 people and just one neighborhood, Unicoi is the 157th largest community in Tennessee.

Occupations and Workforce

Because occupations involving physical labor dominate the local economy, Unicoi is generally considered to be a blue-collar town. 39.42% of the Unicoi workforce is employed in blue-collar occupations, compared to the national average of 27.7%. Overall, Unicoi is a town of professionals, sales and office workers, and construction workers and builders. There are especially a lot of people living in Unicoi who work in office and administrative support (9.35%), sales jobs (9.28%), and farm management occupations (8.77%).

In addition, many people in Unicoi have jobs in agriculture, more so than in most other communities in America. As a result, you will see quite a number of farms around town.

Of important note, Unicoi is also a town of artists. Unicoi has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Unicoi’s character.

Setting & Lifestyle

It is a fairly quiet town because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Unicoi has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Unicoi has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Unicoi than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Unicoi may be for you.

For a small town, Unicoi has a lot of people who use public transit to get to work, and those that do mostly ride the bus. This suggests that a real need for low-cost transportation in Unicoi exists, and local transit is helping to meet that need.

Unicoi Demographics

In terms of college education, Unicoi is nearly on par with the US average for all cities of 21.84%: 20.40% of adults 25 and older in Unicoi have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree.

The per capita income in Unicoi in 2010 was $29,742, which is wealthy relative to Tennessee, and upper middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $118,968 for a family of four. However, Unicoi contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

The people who call Unicoi home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Unicoi residents report their race to be White, followed by Asian. Important ancestries of people in Unicoi include German, Irish, Scots-Irish, and Scottish.

The most common language spoken in Unicoi is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and Indic languages.
