Volga Profile

Overview

Volga is a very small city located in the state of South Dakota. With a population of 1,865 people and just one neighborhood, Volga is the 42nd largest community in South Dakota.

Volga real estate is some of the most expensive in South Dakota, although Volga house values don't compare to the most expensive real estate in the U.S.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some cities where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Volga is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Volga is a city of sales and office workers, professionals, and production and manufacturing workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Volga who work in office and administrative support (18.38%), management occupations (11.40%), and sales jobs (6.18%).

Setting & Lifestyle

Because of many things, Volga is a very good place for families to consider. With an enviable combination of good schools, low crime, college-educated neighbors who tend to support education because of their own experiences, and a high rate of home ownership in predominantly single-family properties, Volga really has some of the features that families look for when choosing a good community to raise children. Is Volga perfect? Of course not, and if you like frenetic nightlife, it will be far from your cup of tea. But overall this is a solid community, with many things to recommend it as a family-friendly place to live.

Residents of the city have the good fortune of having one of the shortest daily commutes compared to the rest of the country. On average, they spend only 17.53 minutes getting to work every day.

As is often the case in a small city, Volga doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.

Volga Demographics

The percentage of people in Volga who are college-educated is somewhat higher than the average US community of 21.84%: 27.97% of adults in Volga have at least a bachelor's degree.

The per capita income in Volga in 2010 was $24,415, which is middle income relative to South Dakota and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $97,660 for a family of four. However, Volga contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

The people who call Volga home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Volga residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Important ancestries of people in Volga include Norwegian, Dutch, Irish, and Swedish.

The most common language spoken in Volga is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and African languages.
