Loretto Profile

Overview

Loretto is a very small borough located in the state of Pennsylvania. With a population of 1,376 people and just one neighborhood, Loretto is the 720th largest community in Pennsylvania. Loretto has an unusually large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic boroughs.

Occupations and Workforce

Loretto is a decidedly white-collar borough, with fully 87.05% of the workforce employed in white-collar jobs, well above the national average. Overall, Loretto is a borough of service providers, professionals, and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Loretto who work in food service (18.73%), personal care services (15.70%), and community and social services (13.77%).

A relatively large number of people in Loretto telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 9.64% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Setting & Lifestyle

Loretto is a small town with a large college student population. Because of this, there is a real youthful, hip vibe to the place, and much of the life in the town is centered on the college. This has helped Loretto to buck the trend of other small towns that have suffered declining populations over the past 20 to 30 years. Spending by students, and faculty and staff jobs, are a big part of the local economy.

Loretto’s overall crime rate ranks among the lowest in the nation, making it a very safe place to live.

Compared to the rest of the country, citizens of Loretto spend much less time in their cars: on average, their commute to work is only 14.32 minutes. This also means that noise and pollution levels in the borough are less than they would otherwise be.

Loretto is a small borough, and as such doesn't have a public transit system that people use to get to and from their jobs every day.

Loretto Demographics

If knowledge is power, Loretto is a pretty powerful place. 50.00% of the adults in Loretto have earned a 4-year college degree, masters degree, MD, law degree, or even PhD. Compare that to the national average of 21.84% for all cities and towns.

The per capita income in Loretto in 2010 was $6,527, which is low income relative to Pennsylvania and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $26,108 for a family of four. However, Loretto contains both very wealthy and poor people as well. Loretto also has one of the higher rates of people living in poverty in the nation, with 43.48% of its population below the federal poverty line.

The people who call Loretto home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Loretto residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Important ancestries of people in Loretto include Irish, Italian, Polish, and English.

The most common language spoken in Loretto is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and Vietnamese.
