Grantham Profile

Overview

Grantham is a very small town located in the state of Pennsylvania. With a population of 2,407 people and just one neighborhood, Grantham is the 566th largest community in Pennsylvania.

Occupations and Workforce

Grantham is a decidedly white-collar town, with fully 97.35% of the workforce employed in white-collar jobs, well above the national average. Overall, Grantham is a town of service providers, sales and office workers, and professionals. There are especially a lot of people living in Grantham who work in food service (25.47%), office and administrative support (13.93%), and maintenance occupations (13.85%).

Of important note, Grantham is also a town of artists. Grantham has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Grantham’s character.

One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their home: 12.99% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Setting & Lifestyle

Grantham is a small town where college students really create the town feel and character. So many small towns have lost population over the last 20-30 years that having the local college presence in the Grantham area, with all of the energy of the students filling area dorms and apartments each fall, really helps Grantham maintain a good economy.

The town is relatively quiet, having a combination of lower population density and few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. For example, Grantham has relatively fewer families with younger children, and/or college students. Combined, this makes Grantham a pretty quiet place to live overall. If you like quiet, you will probably enjoy it here.

One of the benefits of Grantham is that there is very little traffic. The average commute to work is 10.39 minutes, which is substantially less than the national average. Not only does this mean that the drive to work is less aggravating, but noise and pollution levels are lower as a result.

Grantham is a small town, and as such doesn't have a public transit system that people use to get to and from their jobs every day.

Grantham Demographics

The population of Grantham has one of the lowest overall levels of education in the country: only 4.35% of people over 25 hold a college degree. The national average for all municipalities is 21.84%.

The per capita income in Grantham in 2010 was $10,232, which is low income relative to Pennsylvania and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $40,928 for a family of four.

Grantham is a somewhat ethnically-diverse town. The people who call Grantham home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Grantham residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Important ancestries of people in Grantham include Irish, Italian, English, and Scottish.

The most common language spoken in Grantham is English. Other important languages spoken here include Chinese and Spanish.
