Gearhart Profile

Overview

Gearhart is a very small coastal city (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of Oregon. With a population of 1,562 people and just one neighborhood, Gearhart is the 149th largest community in Oregon.

Gearhart home prices are not only among the most expensive in Oregon, but Gearhart real estate also consistently ranks among the most expensive in America.

Occupations and Workforce

Gearhart is a decidedly white-collar city, with fully 85.40% of the workforce employed in white-collar jobs, well above the national average. Overall, Gearhart is a city of sales and office workers, professionals, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Gearhart who work in management occupations (15.17%), office and administrative support (14.16%), and sales jobs (10.98%).

Of important note, Gearhart is also a city of artists. Gearhart has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Gearhart’s character.

One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their home: 11.18% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Setting & Lifestyle

Another notable thing is that Gearhart is an extremely popular destination for tourists and seasonal residents. So much of the population is seasonal such that the city’s population swells significantly during the vacation season, and drops again when the season ends. Because of this, much of the local economy is centered around tourism; some businesses may be operated only during the high season. During the low season, year-round residents will notice that the city is a substantially quieter place to live.

Overall, Gearhart’s crime rate is one of the lowest in the nation, which makes a great place to live if safety is an important concern.

Gearhart is also nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Such areas are often places that visitors and locals go for waterfront activities or taking in the scenery.

Residents of the city have the good fortune of having one of the shortest daily commutes compared to the rest of the country. On average, they spend only 16.49 minutes getting to work every day.

In Gearhart, a lot of people use the bus to get to work every day though Gearhart is a relatively small city. Those that ride the bus are primarily traveling out of town to good jobs in other cities.

Gearhart Demographics

The education level of Gearhart citizens is substantially higher than the typical US community, as 33.76% of adults in Gearhart have at least a bachelor's degree.

The per capita income in Gearhart in 2010 was $27,863, which is upper middle income relative to Oregon and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $111,452 for a family of four. However, Gearhart contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

The people who call Gearhart home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Gearhart residents report their race to be White, followed by Asian. Important ancestries of people in Gearhart include English, Irish, Italian, and Norwegian.

The most common language spoken in Gearhart is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and Polish.
