Caroga Lake Profile

Overview

Caroga Lake is a tiny town located in the state of New York. With a population of 503 people and just one neighborhood, Caroga Lake is the 841st largest community in New York. Caroga Lake has an unusually large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic towns.

Occupations and Workforce

When you are in Caroga Lake, you'll notice that it is more blue-collar than most other communities in America. 46.79% of Caroga Lake’s employed work in blue-collar jobs, while America averages only 27.7% that do. Overall, Caroga Lake is a town of professionals, production and manufacturing workers, and transportation and shipping workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Caroga Lake who work in healthcare (9.81%), office and administrative support (9.43%), and healthcare suport services (6.04%).

Also of interest is that Caroga Lake has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their home: 8.30% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Setting & Lifestyle

Another notable thing is that Caroga Lake is an extremely popular vacation destination. A significant portion of the population is seasonal. During the vacation season, the town experiences a large influx of people who take up residence in second homes they own in the area. As the vacation season ends, the population drops again, leaving behind a substantially quieter and smaller town.

It is a fairly quiet town because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Caroga Lake has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Caroga Lake has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Caroga Lake than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Caroga Lake may be for you.

Caroga Lake is a small town, and as such doesn't have a public transit system that people use to get to and from their jobs every day.

Caroga Lake Demographics

The percentage of people in Caroga Lake who are college-educated is somewhat higher than the average US community of 21.84%: 25.16% of adults in Caroga Lake have at least a bachelor's degree.

The per capita income in Caroga Lake in 2010 was $23,453, which is lower middle income relative to New York, and middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $93,812 for a family of four.

The people who call Caroga Lake home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Caroga Lake residents report their race to be White. Important ancestries of people in Caroga Lake include Irish, English, Italian, and Scottish.

The most common language spoken in Caroga Lake is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and French.
