Living in Athens

Athens is a very small village located in the state of New York. With a population of 1,583 people and two associated neighborhoods, Athens is the 663rd largest community in New York. Athens has an unusually large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic villages.

Of important note, Athens is also a village of artists. Athens has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Athens’s character.

A relatively large number of people in Athens telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 11.06% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Athens’s overall crime rate ranks among the lowest in the nation, making it a very safe place to live.

The village is relatively quiet, having a combination of lower population density and few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. For example, Athens has relatively fewer families with younger children, and/or college students. Combined, this makes Athens a pretty quiet place to live overall. If you like quiet, you will probably enjoy it here.

Even though Athens is a smaller village, it has many people who hop on public transportation – mostly the bus for their daily commute to work. Typically, these people are commuting to good jobs in the surrounding cities.

The education level of Athens ranks among the highest in the nation. Of the 25-and-older adult population in Athens, 41.48% have at least a bachelor's degree. The typical US community has just 21.84% of its adults holding a bachelor's degree or graduate degree.

The per capita income in Athens in 2022 was $47,566, which is upper middle income relative to New York, and wealthy relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $190,264 for a family of four. However, Athens contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

Athens is a very ethnically-diverse village. The people who call Athens home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Athens residents report their race to be White, followed by Asian. Athens also has a sizeable Hispanic population (people of Hispanic origin can be of any race). People of Hispanic or Latino origin account for 12.73% of the village’s residents. Important ancestries of people in Athens include Italian, Irish, German, English, and Dutch.

The most common language spoken in Athens is English. Other important languages spoken here include Polish and Spanish.
