White Sands Profile

Overview

White Sands is a very small town located in the state of New Mexico. With a population of 1,675 people and just one neighborhood, White Sands is the 70th largest community in New Mexico.

Occupations and Workforce

The armed forces are a huge part of the life in White Sands, employing 14.35% of the workforce. While it is a military town, the civilian sector still plays an important role in the local economy, where the Education and Public Service industries employ 19.57% and 17.02% of the civilian workforce, respectively.

And if you like science, one thing you'll find is that White Sands has lots of scientists living in town - whether they be life scientists, physical scientists (like astronomers), or social scientists (like geographers!). So, if you're scientific-minded, you might like it here too.

Also of interest is that White Sands has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

Setting & Lifestyle

Because of many things, White Sands is a great place for families with children to consider. First of all, many other families with children live here, making White Sands a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families, as well as find family-oriented services and community. The town’s good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic values. With regard to real estate, White Sands has a high rate of owner-occupied single family homes, which tends to reflect stability in the local community. Finally, White Sands’s overall crime rate is lower than average for the country.

One of the benefits of White Sands is that there is very little traffic. The average commute to work is 13.07 minutes, which is substantially less than the national average. Not only does this mean that the drive to work is less aggravating, but noise and pollution levels are lower as a result.

Being a small town, White Sands does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.

White Sands Demographics

The citizens of White Sands are very well educated compared to the average community in the nation: 37.84% of adults in White Sands have a bachelor's degree or even advanced degree.

The per capita income in White Sands in 2010 was $17,770, which is middle income relative to New Mexico, and low income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $71,080 for a family of four. However, White Sands contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

White Sands is an extremely ethnically-diverse town. The people who call White Sands home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of White Sands residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. White Sands also has a sizeable Hispanic population (people of Hispanic origin can be of any race). People of Hispanic or Latino origin account for 19.51% of the town’s residents. Important ancestries of people in White Sands include German, Irish, Italian, English, and French.
