Pecos Profile

Overview

Pecos is a very small village located in the state of New Mexico. With a population of 1,324 people and just one neighborhood, Pecos is the 76th largest community in New Mexico.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some villages where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Pecos is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Pecos is a village of service providers, professionals, and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Pecos who work in office and administrative support (16.36%), maintenance occupations (9.78%), and legal occupations (9.11%).

A relatively large number of people in Pecos telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 14.33% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Setting & Lifestyle

Overall, Pecos’s crime rate is one of the lowest in the nation, which makes a great place to live if safety is an important concern.

Residents will find that the village is relatively quiet. This is because it is not over-populated, and it has fewer college students, renters, and young children - all of whom can be noisy at times. So, if you're looking for a relatively peaceful place to live, Pecos is worth considering.

One downside of living in Pecos is that it can take a long time to commute to work. In Pecos, the average commute to work is 31.27 minutes, which is quite a bit higher than the national average.

Pecos is very much a car-oriented village. This is because the population of Pecos isn't large enough or dense enough to support an extensive public transit system. It has a lot of rural roads, and the distance between houses can be quite large, which together tends to discourage walking and bicycling to work. 0.98% of residents commute to work in their own car (and the drive is typically to a job out of town). People also tend to drive out of town for other services as well, such as shopping, doctors appointments, and more.

Pecos is a small village, and as such doesn't have a public transit system that people use to get to and from their jobs every day.

Pecos Demographics

In Pecos, just 11.79% of people have at least a bachelor's degree, which is quite a bit lower than the national average for cities and towns of 21.84%.

The per capita income in Pecos in 2010 was $17,332, which is middle income relative to New Mexico, and low income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $69,328 for a family of four. Pecos also has one of the higher rates of people living in poverty in the nation, with 33.89% of its population below the federal poverty line.

Pecos is an extremely ethnically-diverse village. The people who call Pecos home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. People of Hispanic or Latino origin are the most prevalent group in Pecos, accounting for 87.37% of the village’s residents (people of Hispanic or Latino origin can be of any race). The greatest number of Pecos residents report their race to be White. Important ancestries of people in Pecos include Irish, Polish, English, and Yugoslavian.

The most common language spoken in Pecos is Spanish. Other important languages spoken here include English and German.
