Barnegat Light Profile

Overview

Barnegat Light is a tiny coastal borough (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of New Jersey. With a population of 576 people and just one neighborhood, Barnegat Light is the 483rd largest community in New Jersey.

Barnegat Light home prices are not only among the most expensive in New Jersey, but Barnegat Light real estate also consistently ranks among the most expensive in America.

Occupations and Workforce

Barnegat Light is neither predominantly blue-collar nor white-collar, instead having a mixed workforce of both blue-collar and white-collar jobs. Overall, Barnegat Light is a borough of managers, sales and office workers, and professionals. There are especially a lot of people living in Barnegat Light who work in sales jobs (22.27%), management occupations (21.48%), and farm management occupations (8.98%).

There are quite a few people in the armed forces living in Barnegat Light, and when you visit or drive around town, you will see military people in and out of uniform, shopping, enjoying life, and being part of the community.

Also of interest is that Barnegat Light has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

A relatively large number of people in Barnegat Light telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 26.04% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Setting & Lifestyle

Another notable thing is that Barnegat Light is a major vacation destination. Much of the borough’s population is seasonal: many people own second homes and only live there part-time, during the vacation season. The effect on the local economy is that many of the businesses are dependent on tourist dollars, and may operate only during the high season. As the vacation season ends, Barnegat Light’s population drops significantly, such that year-round residents will notice that the city is a much quieter place to live.

Barnegat Light is a good choice for families with children because of several factors. Many other families with children live here, making it a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families. The borough’s good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic success. Many people own their own single-family homes, providing areas for children to play and stability in the community. Finally, Barnegat Light’s overall crime rate is lower than average for the country.

The borough is relatively quiet, having a combination of lower population density and few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. For example, Barnegat Light has relatively fewer families with younger children, and/or college students. Combined, this makes Barnegat Light a pretty quiet place to live overall. If you like quiet, you will probably enjoy it here.

Barnegat Light is also nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Quite often, nautical areas such as these attract visitors and locals who come to enjoy the scenery and various waterfront activities.

As is often the case in a small borough, Barnegat Light doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.

Barnegat Light Demographics

The citizens of Barnegat Light are very well educated compared to the average community in the nation: 38.21% of adults in Barnegat Light have a bachelor's degree or even advanced degree.
