St. James Profile

Overview

St. James is a very small coastal town (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of North Carolina. With a population of 4,922 people and just one neighborhood, St. James is the 240th largest community in North Carolina. Much of the housing stock in St. James was built relatively recently. The construction of new real estate can often be taken as an indication that the local St. James economy is robust, and that jobs or other amenities are attracting an influx of new residents. This seems to be the case in St. James, where the median household income is $89,519.00.

St. James home prices are not only among the most expensive in North Carolina, but St. James real estate also consistently ranks among the most expensive in America.

Occupations and Workforce

St. James is a decidedly white-collar town, with fully 93.11% of the workforce employed in white-collar jobs, well above the national average. Overall, St. James is a town of sales and office workers, managers, and professionals. There are especially a lot of people living in St. James who work in sales jobs (38.56%), business and financial occupations (11.88%), and personal care services (11.73%).

A relatively large number of people in St. James telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 16.42% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Setting & Lifestyle

In addition, St. James is home to many people who could be described as "urban sophisticates". Urban sophisticates are people who are both educated and wealthy, and thus tend to be older, richer, and more established than young professionals. "Urban sophisticates" is not just about being educated and well-off financially: it is a point of view and state of mind, one that you might call 'urbaneness'. But such people can and do regularly live in small towns, suburbs and rural areas, as well as in big cities. They read, support the arts and high-end shops, and love travel.

The town is relatively quiet, having a combination of lower population density and few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. For example, St. James has relatively fewer families with younger children, and/or college students. Combined, this makes St. James a pretty quiet place to live overall. If you like quiet, you will probably enjoy it here.

St. James is also nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Quite often, nautical areas such as these attract visitors and locals who come to enjoy the scenery and various waterfront activities.

As is often the case in a small town, St. James doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.

St. James Demographics

Do you have a 4-year college degree or graduate degree? If so, you may feel right at home in St. James. 58.81% of adults here have a 4-year degree or graduate degree, whereas the national average for all cities and towns is just 21.84%.

The per capita income in St. James in 2010 was $69,215, which is wealthy relative to North Carolina and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $276,860 for a family of four.

The people who call St. James home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of St. James residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Important ancestries of people in St. James include Irish, English, Italian, and Polish.
