North Topsail Beach Profile

Overview

North Topsail Beach is a very small coastal town (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of North Carolina. With a population of 1,000 people and just one neighborhood, North Topsail Beach is the 401st largest community in North Carolina.

North Topsail Beach real estate is some of the most expensive in North Carolina, although North Topsail Beach house values don't compare to the most expensive real estate in the U.S.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some towns, North Topsail Beach isn’t mainly white- or blue-collar. Instead, the most prevalent occupations for people in North Topsail Beach are a mix of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, North Topsail Beach is a town of professionals, sales and office workers, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in North Topsail Beach who work in teaching (17.24%), sales jobs (13.51%), and management occupations (12.64%).

There are many members of the armed forces living in North Topsail Beach. You will notice when you visit or live here that some of the people you meet or see around town are employed by the armed services - even if they are not always in uniform.

Also of interest is that North Topsail Beach has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their home: 11.73% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Setting & Lifestyle

Another notable thing is that North Topsail Beach is an extremely popular vacation destination. A significant portion of the population is seasonal. During the vacation season, the town experiences a large influx of people who take up residence in second homes they own in the area. As the vacation season ends, the population drops again, leaving behind a substantially quieter and smaller town.

It is a fairly quiet town because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) North Topsail Beach has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. North Topsail Beach has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in North Topsail Beach than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, North Topsail Beach may be for you.

North Topsail Beach is also nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Quite often, nautical areas such as these attract visitors and locals who come to enjoy the scenery and various waterfront activities.

One downside of living in North Topsail Beach is that it can take a long time to commute to work. In North Topsail Beach, the average commute to work is 37.33 minutes, which is quite a bit higher than the national average.

North Topsail Beach is a small town, and as such doesn't have a public transit system that people use to get to and from their jobs every day.
