Walnut Profile

Overview

Walnut is a tiny town located in the state of Mississippi. With a population of 764 people and just one neighborhood, Walnut is the 183rd largest community in Mississippi.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Walnut is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Walnut is a town of professionals, service providers, and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Walnut who work in office and administrative support (12.17%), teaching (10.58%), and personal care services (8.99%).

Of important note, Walnut is also a town of artists. Walnut has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Walnut’s character.

Telecommuters are a relatively large percentage of the workforce: 14.97% of people work from home. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce it is high relative to the nation. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Setting & Lifestyle

The town is relatively quiet, having a combination of lower population density and few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. For example, Walnut has relatively fewer families with younger children, and/or college students. Combined, this makes Walnut a pretty quiet place to live overall. If you like quiet, you will probably enjoy it here.

As is often the case in a small town, Walnut doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.

Walnut Demographics

The rate of college-level education in Walnut is quite a bit lower than the national average among all cities of 21.84%: just 10.12% of people here over 25 have a bachelor's degree or an advanced degree.

The per capita income in Walnut in 2010 was $13,614, which is lower middle income relative to Mississippi, and low income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $54,456 for a family of four. Walnut also has one of the higher rates of people living in poverty in the nation, with 45.21% of its population below the federal poverty line.

Walnut is a somewhat ethnically-diverse town. The people who call Walnut home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Walnut residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Important ancestries of people in Walnut include German, Irish, French , and Dutch.

The most common language spoken in Walnut is English. Other important languages spoken here include Tagalog and Spanish.
