Garrison Profile

Overview

Garrison is a tiny city located in the state of Minnesota. With a population of 201 people and just one neighborhood, Garrison is the 470th largest community in Minnesota.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some cities where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Garrison is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Garrison is a city of service providers, sales and office workers, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Garrison who work in office and administrative support (18.00%), maintenance occupations (14.00%), and management occupations (11.00%).

Of important note, Garrison is also a city of artists. Garrison has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Garrison’s character.

Setting & Lifestyle

Another notable thing is that Garrison is a major vacation destination. Much of the city’s population is seasonal: many people own second homes and only live there part-time, during the vacation season. The effect on the local economy is that many of the businesses are dependent on tourist dollars, and may operate only during the high season. As the vacation season ends, Garrison’s population drops significantly, such that year-round residents will notice that the city is a much quieter place to live.

Garrison’s overall crime rate ranks among the lowest in the nation, making it a very safe place to live.

The city is relatively quiet, having a combination of lower population density and few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. For example, Garrison has relatively fewer families with younger children, and/or college students. Combined, this makes Garrison a pretty quiet place to live overall. If you like quiet, you will probably enjoy it here.

Being a small city, Garrison does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.

Garrison Demographics

The percentage of adults in Garrison with college degrees is slightly lower than the national average of 21.84% for all communities. 15.68% of adults in Garrison have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree.

The per capita income in Garrison in 2010 was $21,833, which is lower middle income relative to Minnesota, and middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $87,332 for a family of four.

The people who call Garrison home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Garrison residents report their race to be White, followed by Native American. Important ancestries of people in Garrison include Norwegian, Irish, Swedish, and Polish.

The most common language spoken in Garrison is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and German.
