Boothbay Profile

Overview

Boothbay is a very small coastal town (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of Maine. With a population of 3,074 people and just one neighborhood, Boothbay is the 112th largest community in Maine.

Boothbay real estate is some of the most expensive in Maine, although Boothbay house values don't compare to the most expensive real estate in the U.S.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some towns, Boothbay isn’t mainly white- or blue-collar. Instead, the most prevalent occupations for people in Boothbay are a mix of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Boothbay is a town of professionals, sales and office workers, and construction workers and builders. There are especially a lot of people living in Boothbay who work in office and administrative support (12.35%), teaching (10.85%), and management occupations (10.38%).

Of important note, Boothbay is also a town of artists. Boothbay has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Boothbay’s character.

A relatively large number of people in Boothbay telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 11.95% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Setting & Lifestyle

Another notable thing is that Boothbay is a major vacation destination. Much of the town’s population is seasonal: many people own second homes and only live there part-time, during the vacation season. The effect on the local economy is that many of the businesses are dependent on tourist dollars, and may operate only during the high season. As the vacation season ends, Boothbay’s population drops significantly, such that year-round residents will notice that the city is a much quieter place to live.

Boothbay is a good choice for families with children because of several factors. Many other families with children live here, making it a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families. The town’s good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic success. Many people own their own single-family homes, providing areas for children to play and stability in the community. Finally, Boothbay’s overall crime rate is lower than average for the country.

Residents will find that the town is relatively quiet. This is because it is not over-populated, and it has fewer college students, renters, and young children - all of whom can be noisy at times. So, if you're looking for a relatively peaceful place to live, Boothbay is worth considering.

One of the nice things about Boothbay is that it is nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities.

One of the benefits of Boothbay is that there is very little traffic. The average commute to work is 18.61 minutes, which is substantially less than the national average. Not only does this mean that the drive to work is less aggravating, but noise and pollution levels are lower as a result.

Boothbay Demographics

The population of Boothbay is very well educated relative to most cities and towns in the nation, where the average community has 21.84% of its adult population holding a 4-year degree or higher: 36.00% of adults in Boothbay have a bachelor's degree or even advanced degree.

The per capita income in Boothbay in 2010 was $33,650, which is wealthy relative to Maine and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $134,600 for a family of four. However, Boothbay contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

The people who call Boothbay home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Boothbay residents report their race to be White, followed by Native American. Important ancestries of people in Boothbay include Irish, German, French , and Scottish.

The most common language spoken in Boothbay is English. Other important languages spoken here include German and French.
