Upperco Profile

Overview

Upperco is a very small town located in the state of Maryland. With a population of 4,569 people and just one neighborhood, Upperco is the 133rd largest community in Maryland.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Upperco is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Upperco is a town of professionals, sales and office workers, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Upperco who work in office and administrative support (11.36%), management occupations (10.67%), and sales jobs (10.18%).

Also of interest is that Upperco has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

Of important note, Upperco is also a town of artists. Upperco has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Upperco’s character.

One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their home: 9.85% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Setting & Lifestyle

Upperco is a good choice for families with children because of several factors. Many other families with children live here, making it a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families. The town’s good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic success. Many people own their own single-family homes, providing areas for children to play and stability in the community. Finally, Upperco’s overall crime rate is lower than average for the country.

In Upperco, however, the average commute to work is quite long. On average, people spend 31.85 minutes each day getting to work, which is significantly higher than the national average.

Upperco is a small town, and as such doesn't have a public transit system that people use to get to and from their jobs every day.

Upperco Demographics

Upperco is one of the most well-educated cities in the nation. 44.86% of adults in Upperco have at least a bachelor's degree. Compare that to the average community in America, which has just 21.84% with a bachelor's degree or higher.

The per capita income in Upperco in 2018 was $53,110, which is wealthy relative to Maryland and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $212,440 for a family of four.

The people who call Upperco home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Upperco residents report their race to be White, followed by Asian. Important ancestries of people in Upperco include German, English, Irish, Italian, and Polish.

The most common language spoken in Upperco is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and German/Yiddish.
