Betterton Profile

Overview

Betterton is a tiny coastal town (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of Maryland. With a population of 325 people and just one neighborhood, Betterton is the 257th largest community in Maryland. Betterton has an unusually large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic towns.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Betterton is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Betterton is a town of managers, service providers, and construction workers and builders. There are especially a lot of people living in Betterton who work in management occupations (15.54%), maintenance occupations (10.14%), and teaching (10.14%).

Setting & Lifestyle

Another notable thing is that Betterton is a major vacation destination. Much of the town’s population is seasonal: many people own second homes and only live there part-time, during the vacation season. The effect on the local economy is that many of the businesses are dependent on tourist dollars, and may operate only during the high season. As the vacation season ends, Betterton’s population drops significantly, such that year-round residents will notice that the city is a much quieter place to live.

Overall, Betterton’s crime rate is one of the lowest in the nation, which makes a great place to live if safety is an important concern.

It is a fairly quiet town because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Betterton has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Betterton has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Betterton than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Betterton may be for you.

One of the nice things about Betterton is that it is nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities.

One downside of living in Betterton, however, is that residents on average have to contend with a long commute, spending on average 38.47 minutes every day commuting to work.

Being a small town, Betterton does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.

Betterton Demographics

The education level of Betterton citizens, measured as those with bachelor's degrees or advanced degrees, is similar to the national average for all American cities and towns. 19.32% of adults 25 and older in Betterton have a college degree.

The per capita income in Betterton in 2010 was $27,863, which is lower middle income relative to Maryland, and upper middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $111,452 for a family of four. However, Betterton contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

The people who call Betterton home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Betterton residents report their race to be White, followed by Native American. Important ancestries of people in Betterton include English, Irish, Italian, and Polish.

The most common language spoken in Betterton is English. Other important languages spoken here include African languages and Hebrew.
