Tisbury Profile

Overview

Tisbury is a very small coastal town (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of Massachusetts. With a population of 4,099 people and just one neighborhood, Tisbury is the 261st largest community in Massachusetts.

Tisbury home prices are not only among the most expensive in Massachusetts, but Tisbury real estate also consistently ranks among the most expensive in America.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Tisbury is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Tisbury is a town of professionals, managers, and construction workers and builders. There are especially a lot of people living in Tisbury who work in management occupations (17.50%), teaching (11.50%), and office and administrative support (10.08%).

Setting & Lifestyle

Another notable thing is that Tisbury is an extremely popular destination for tourists and seasonal residents. So much of the population is seasonal such that the town’s population swells significantly during the vacation season, and drops again when the season ends. Because of this, much of the local economy is centered around tourism; some businesses may be operated only during the high season. During the low season, year-round residents will notice that the city is a substantially quieter place to live.

Tisbury is also nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Quite often, nautical areas such as these attract visitors and locals who come to enjoy the scenery and various waterfront activities.

Compared to the rest of the country, citizens of Tisbury spend much less time in their cars: on average, their commute to work is only 15.14 minutes. This also means that noise and pollution levels in the town are less than they would otherwise be.

In Tisbury, a lot of people use the bus to get to work every day though Tisbury is a relatively small town. Those that ride the bus are primarily traveling out of town to good jobs in other cities.

Tisbury Demographics

Tisbury is one of the most well-educated cities in the nation. 40.09% of adults in Tisbury have at least a bachelor's degree. Compare that to the average community in America, which has just 21.84% with a bachelor's degree or higher.

The per capita income in Tisbury in 2010 was $31,218, which is lower middle income relative to Massachusetts, and upper middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $124,872 for a family of four. However, Tisbury contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

The people who call Tisbury home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Tisbury residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Important ancestries of people in Tisbury include English, Portuguese, German, and Brazilian.

The most common language spoken in Tisbury is English. Other important languages spoken here include Portuguese and African languages.
