New Marlborough Profile

Overview

New Marlborough is a very small town located in the state of Massachusetts. With a population of 1,478 people and just one neighborhood, New Marlborough is the 300th largest community in Massachusetts.

Housing costs in New Marlborough are among some of the highest in the nation, although real estate prices here don't compare to real estate prices in the most expensive communities in Massachusetts.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, New Marlborough is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, New Marlborough is a town of professionals, service providers, and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in New Marlborough who work in management occupations (12.52%), healthcare (10.98%), and office and administrative support (8.94%).

Setting & Lifestyle

Another notable thing is that New Marlborough is a major vacation destination. Much of the town’s population is seasonal: many people own second homes and only live there part-time, during the vacation season. The effect on the local economy is that many of the businesses are dependent on tourist dollars, and may operate only during the high season. As the vacation season ends, New Marlborough’s population drops significantly, such that year-round residents will notice that the city is a much quieter place to live.

In addition, New Marlborough is home to many people who could be described as "urban sophisticates". Urban sophisticates are people who are both educated and wealthy, and thus tend to be older, richer, and more established than young professionals. "Urban sophisticates" is not just about being educated and well-off financially: it is a point of view and state of mind, one that you might call 'urbaneness'. But such people can and do regularly live in small towns, suburbs and rural areas, as well as in big cities. They read, support the arts and high-end shops, and love travel.

Because of many things, New Marlborough is a great place for families with children to consider. First of all, many other families with children live here, making New Marlborough a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families, as well as find family-oriented services and community. The town’s good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic values. With regard to real estate, New Marlborough has a high rate of owner-occupied single family homes, which tends to reflect stability in the local community. Finally, New Marlborough’s overall crime rate ranks among the lowest in the country, making it one of the safest places to raise a family.

The town is relatively quiet, having a combination of lower population density and few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. For example, New Marlborough has relatively fewer families with younger children, and/or college students. Combined, this makes New Marlborough a pretty quiet place to live overall. If you like quiet, you will probably enjoy it here.

In New Marlborough, however, the average commute to work is quite long. On average, people spend 30.40 minutes each day getting to work, which is significantly higher than the national average.

New Marlborough Demographics

The education level of New Marlborough ranks among the highest in the nation. Of the 25-and-older adult population in New Marlborough, 42.59% have at least a bachelor's degree. The typical US community has just 21.84% of its adults holding a bachelor's degree or graduate degree.

The per capita income in New Marlborough in 2010 was $35,610, which is middle income relative to Massachusetts, and wealthy relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $142,440 for a family of four. However, New Marlborough contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

The people who call New Marlborough home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of New Marlborough residents report their race to be White, followed by Asian. Important ancestries of people in New Marlborough include English, German, Italian, and Scottish.

The most common language spoken in New Marlborough is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and French.
