Mount Vernon Profile

Overview

Mount Vernon is a very small city located in the state of Iowa. With a population of 4,486 people and just one neighborhood, Mount Vernon is the 86th largest community in Iowa. Mount Vernon has an unusually large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic cities.

Mount Vernon real estate is some of the most expensive in Iowa, although Mount Vernon house values don't compare to the most expensive real estate in the U.S.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some cities where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Mount Vernon is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Mount Vernon is a city of professionals, sales and office workers, and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Mount Vernon who work in office and administrative support (18.46%), teaching (13.56%), and business and financial occupations (6.93%).

Of important note, Mount Vernon is also a city of artists. Mount Vernon has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Mount Vernon’s character.

Also of interest is that Mount Vernon has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

Telecommuters are a relatively large percentage of the workforce: 12.70% of people work from home. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce it is high relative to the nation. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Setting & Lifestyle

Mount Vernon is a place where college students are a big part of the character and culture of the town. Small towns have often struggled with declining populations over the past few decades, but the presence of such a large college student population has helped Mount Vernon to fight this trend. Not only does the college population add spending and jobs to local economy, but it also contributes a very tangible, youthful energy to the town.

As is often the case in a small city, Mount Vernon doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.

Mount Vernon Demographics

Do you have a 4-year college degree or graduate degree? If so, you may feel right at home in Mount Vernon. 59.45% of adults here have a 4-year degree or graduate degree, whereas the national average for all cities and towns is just 21.84%.

The per capita income in Mount Vernon in 2010 was $21,749, which is lower middle income relative to Iowa, and middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $86,996 for a family of four. However, Mount Vernon contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

Mount Vernon is a somewhat ethnically-diverse city. The people who call Mount Vernon home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Mount Vernon residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Important ancestries of people in Mount Vernon include English, Irish, Czech, and Norwegian.
