Elkhart Profile

Overview

Elkhart is a tiny city located in the state of Iowa. With a population of 742 people and just one neighborhood, Elkhart is the 336th largest community in Iowa. There's nothing like the smell of a brand new house, and in Elkhart, you'll find that a large proportion of houses were recently built. New growth in residential real estate is an indication that people are choosing to move to Elkhart, and putting down their money on brand new construction. Elkhart’s real estate is, on average, some of the newest in the nation. Elkhart does seem to be experiencing an influx of affluent people, because the median household income is $49,375.00.

Elkhart real estate is some of the most expensive in Iowa, although Elkhart house values don't compare to the most expensive real estate in the U.S.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some cities where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Elkhart is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Elkhart is a city of professionals, construction workers and builders, and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Elkhart who work in office and administrative support (14.57%), healthcare (14.00%), and sales jobs (7.43%).

Setting & Lifestyle

It is a fairly quiet city because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Elkhart has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Elkhart has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Elkhart than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Elkhart may be for you.

Elkhart is a small city, and as such doesn't have a public transit system that people use to get to and from their jobs every day.

Elkhart Demographics

In terms of college education, Elkhart is somewhat better educated than the 21.84% who have a 4-year degree or higher in the typical US community: 26.67% of adults 25 and older in the city have at least a bachelor's degree.

The per capita income in Elkhart in 2010 was $25,625, which is upper middle income relative to Iowa and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $102,500 for a family of four. However, Elkhart contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

The people who call Elkhart home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Elkhart residents report their race to be White. Important ancestries of people in Elkhart include Irish, Norwegian, Italian, and English.

The most common language spoken in Elkhart is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and African languages.
