Crested Butte Profile

Overview

Crested Butte is a very small town located in the state of Colorado. With a population of 1,579 people and just one neighborhood, Crested Butte is the 135th largest community in Colorado.

Crested Butte home prices are not only among the most expensive in Colorado, but Crested Butte real estate also consistently ranks among the most expensive in America.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Crested Butte is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Crested Butte is a town of service providers, sales and office workers, and professionals. There are especially a lot of people living in Crested Butte who work in management occupations (12.70%), sales jobs (12.49%), and office and administrative support (12.27%).

Of important note, Crested Butte is also a town of artists. Crested Butte has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Crested Butte’s character.

Setting & Lifestyle

Another notable thing is that Crested Butte is an extremely popular destination for tourists and seasonal residents. So much of the population is seasonal such that the town’s population swells significantly during the vacation season, and drops again when the season ends. Because of this, much of the local economy is centered around tourism; some businesses may be operated only during the high season. During the low season, year-round residents will notice that the city is a substantially quieter place to live.

One of the benefits of Crested Butte is that there is very little traffic. The average commute to work is 11.98 minutes, which is substantially less than the national average. Not only does this mean that the drive to work is less aggravating, but noise and pollution levels are lower as a result.

Even though Crested Butte is a smaller town, it has many people who hop on public transportation – mostly the bus for their daily commute to work. Typically, these people are commuting to good jobs in the surrounding cities.

Crested Butte Demographics

If knowledge is power, Crested Butte is a pretty powerful place. 66.73% of the adults in Crested Butte have earned a 4-year college degree, masters degree, MD, law degree, or even PhD. Compare that to the national average of 21.84% for all cities and towns.

The per capita income in Crested Butte in 2010 was $33,029, which is upper middle income relative to Colorado, and wealthy relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $132,116 for a family of four. However, Crested Butte contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

The people who call Crested Butte home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Crested Butte residents report their race to be White, followed by Asian. Important ancestries of people in Crested Butte include English, Irish, Italian, and French .

The most common language spoken in Crested Butte is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and German.
