Descanso Profile

Overview

Descanso is a very small town located in the state of California. With a population of 1,478 people and just one neighborhood, Descanso is the 674th largest community in California.

Housing costs in Descanso are among some of the highest in the nation, although real estate prices here don't compare to real estate prices in the most expensive communities in California.

Occupations and Workforce

Descanso is neither predominantly blue-collar nor white-collar, instead having a mixed workforce of both blue-collar and white-collar jobs. Overall, Descanso is a town of managers, service providers, and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Descanso who work in management occupations (18.28%), office and administrative support (14.71%), and art, media, and design (6.51%).

Of important note, Descanso is also a town of artists. Descanso has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Descanso’s character.

Telecommuters are a relatively large percentage of the workforce: 16.81% of people work from home. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce it is high relative to the nation. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Setting & Lifestyle

The town is relatively quiet, having a combination of lower population density and few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. For example, Descanso has relatively fewer families with younger children, and/or college students. Combined, this makes Descanso a pretty quiet place to live overall. If you like quiet, you will probably enjoy it here.

In Descanso, however, the average commute to work is quite long. On average, people spend 34.73 minutes each day getting to work, which is significantly higher than the national average.

Being a small town, Descanso does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.

Descanso Demographics

The percentage of adults in Descanso who are college-educated is close to the national average for all communities of 21.84%: 20.70% of the adults in Descanso have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree.

The per capita income in Descanso in 2010 was $30,185, which is upper middle income relative to California and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $120,740 for a family of four. However, Descanso contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

Descanso is a somewhat ethnically-diverse town. The people who call Descanso home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Descanso residents report their race to be White, followed by Asian. Important ancestries of people in Descanso include English, Italian, Irish, and Greek.

The most common language spoken in Descanso is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and Laotian.
