Big Sur Profile

Overview

Big Sur is a very small coastal town (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of California. With a population of 1,812 people and just one neighborhood, Big Sur is the 651st largest community in California.

Big Sur home prices are not only among the most expensive in California, but Big Sur real estate also consistently ranks among the most expensive in America.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Big Sur is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Big Sur is a town of service providers, managers, and professionals. There are especially a lot of people living in Big Sur who work in maintenance occupations (12.07%), management occupations (11.42%), and food service (10.89%).

Of important note, Big Sur is also a town of artists. Big Sur has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Big Sur’s character.

Telecommuters are a relatively large percentage of the workforce: 23.10% of people work from home. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce it is high relative to the nation. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Setting & Lifestyle

Big Sur is also nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Such areas are often places that visitors and locals go for waterfront activities or taking in the scenery.

Being a small town, Big Sur does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.

Big Sur Demographics

Big Sur is one of the most well-educated cities in the nation. 40.90% of adults in Big Sur have at least a bachelor's degree. Compare that to the average community in America, which has just 21.84% with a bachelor's degree or higher.

The per capita income in Big Sur in 2010 was $35,996, which is upper middle income relative to California, and wealthy relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $143,984 for a family of four. However, Big Sur contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

Big Sur is a very ethnically-diverse town. The people who call Big Sur home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Big Sur residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Big Sur also has a sizeable Hispanic population (people of Hispanic origin can be of any race). People of Hispanic or Latino origin account for 24.27% of the town’s residents. Important ancestries of people in Big Sur include German, Scottish, Irish, and French .

The most common language spoken in Big Sur is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and German.
