Shoshoni Profile

Overview

Shoshoni is a tiny town located in the state of Wyoming. With a population of 644 people and just one neighborhood, Shoshoni is the 44th largest community in Wyoming.

Shoshoni real estate is some of the most expensive in Wyoming, although Shoshoni house values don't compare to the most expensive real estate in the U.S.

Occupations and Workforce

Because occupations involving physical labor dominate the local economy, Shoshoni is generally considered to be a blue-collar town. 38.93% of the Shoshoni workforce is employed in blue-collar occupations, compared to the national average of 27.7%. Overall, Shoshoni is a town of construction workers and builders, service providers, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Shoshoni who work in management occupations (13.36%), sales jobs (11.45%), and food service (9.16%).

Also of interest is that Shoshoni has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their home: 8.94% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Setting & Lifestyle

The town is relatively quiet, having a combination of lower population density and few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. For example, Shoshoni has relatively fewer families with younger children, and/or college students. Combined, this makes Shoshoni a pretty quiet place to live overall. If you like quiet, you will probably enjoy it here.

Shoshoni is very much a car-oriented town. This is because the population of Shoshoni isn't large enough or dense enough to support an extensive public transit system. It has a lot of rural roads, and the distance between houses can be quite large, which together tends to discourage walking and bicycling to work. 69.16% of residents commute to work in their own car (and the drive is typically to a job out of town). People also tend to drive out of town for other services as well, such as shopping, doctors appointments, and more.

Being a small town, Shoshoni does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.

Shoshoni Demographics

The citizens of Shoshoni are slightly less educated than the national average of 21.84% for the average city or town: 13.67% of adults in Shoshoni have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree

The per capita income in Shoshoni in 2010 was $29,536, which is upper middle income relative to Wyoming and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $118,144 for a family of four. However, Shoshoni contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

Shoshoni is a very ethnically-diverse town. The people who call Shoshoni home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Shoshoni residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Shoshoni also has a sizeable Hispanic population (people of Hispanic origin can be of any race). People of Hispanic or Latino origin account for 14.65% of the town’s residents. Important ancestries of people in Shoshoni include Irish, English, Yugoslavian, and Swedish.

The most common language spoken in Shoshoni is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and Polish.
