Melvin Profile

Overview

Melvin is a tiny town located in the state of Texas. With a population of 180 people and just one neighborhood, Melvin is the 1026th largest community in Texas. Much of the housing stock in Melvin was built prior to World War II, making it one of the older and more historic towns in the country.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Melvin is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Melvin is a town of sales and office workers, service providers, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Melvin who work in office and administrative support (16.22%), management occupations (15.32%), and maintenance occupations (12.61%).

Another important characteristic of Melvin is that a lot of people work in agricultural jobs, especially compared to most other communities in America, and there are quite a number of farms in town.

Setting & Lifestyle

Melvin is a good choice for families with children because of several factors. Many other families with children live here, making it a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families. The town’s good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic success. Many people own their own single-family homes, providing areas for children to play and stability in the community. Finally, Melvin’s overall crime rate ranks among the lowest in the country, making it one of the safest places to raise a family.

The town is relatively quiet, having a combination of lower population density and few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. For example, Melvin has relatively fewer families with younger children, and/or college students. Combined, this makes Melvin a pretty quiet place to live overall. If you like quiet, you will probably enjoy it here.

Melvin is a small town, and as such doesn't have a public transit system that people use to get to and from their jobs every day.

Melvin Demographics

In Melvin, just 9.64% of people over 25 hold a college degree, which is very low compared to the rest of the nation, whereas the average among all cities is 21.84%.

The per capita income in Melvin in 2010 was $14,623, which is low income relative to Texas and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $58,492 for a family of four.
