Selby Profile

Overview

Selby is a tiny city located in the state of South Dakota. With a population of 634 people and just one neighborhood, Selby is the 93rd largest community in South Dakota.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some cities where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Selby is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Selby is a city of sales and office workers, construction workers and builders, and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Selby who work in office and administrative support (20.98%), management occupations (10.63%), and sales jobs (9.77%).

Setting & Lifestyle

The overall crime rate in Selby is one of the lowest in the US. This makes it one of the safer places to live in the country in terms of crime.

It is a fairly quiet city because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Selby has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Selby has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Selby than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Selby may be for you.

Compared to the rest of the country, citizens of Selby spend much less time in their cars: on average, their commute to work is only 17.18 minutes. This also means that noise and pollution levels in the city are less than they would otherwise be.

As is often the case in a small city, Selby doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.

Selby Demographics

In Selby, just 11.06% of people have at least a bachelor's degree, which is quite a bit lower than the national average for cities and towns of 21.84%.

The per capita income in Selby in 2010 was $21,106, which is lower middle income relative to South Dakota and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $84,424 for a family of four.

The people who call Selby home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Selby residents report their race to be White, followed by Native American. Important ancestries of people in Selby include Norwegian, Irish, Russian, and Dutch.

The most common language spoken in Selby is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and German.
