Burke Profile

Overview

Burke is a tiny city located in the state of South Dakota. With a population of 589 people and just one neighborhood, Burke is the 96th largest community in South Dakota.

Occupations and Workforce

Burke is neither predominantly blue-collar nor white-collar, instead having a mixed workforce of both blue-collar and white-collar jobs. Overall, Burke is a city of sales and office workers, professionals, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Burke who work in office and administrative support (14.65%), management occupations (12.09%), and sales jobs (11.36%).

Setting & Lifestyle

Burke’s overall crime rate ranks among the lowest in the nation, making it a very safe place to live.

It is a fairly quiet city because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Burke has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Burke has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Burke than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Burke may be for you.

One of the benefits of Burke is that there is very little traffic. The average commute to work is 12.63 minutes, which is substantially less than the national average. Not only does this mean that the drive to work is less aggravating, but noise and pollution levels are lower as a result.

Being a small city, Burke does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.

Burke Demographics

The citizens of Burke are slightly better educated than the national average of 21.84% for all cities and towns, with 21.33% of adults in Burke having a bachelor's degree or advanced degree.

The per capita income in Burke in 2010 was $25,595, which is upper middle income relative to South Dakota and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $102,380 for a family of four. However, Burke contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

Burke is a somewhat ethnically-diverse city. The people who call Burke home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Burke residents report their race to be White, followed by Native American. Important ancestries of people in Burke include Irish, Czech, English, and Norwegian.

The most common language spoken in Burke is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and Native American languages.
