Alexandria Profile

Overview

Alexandria is a tiny city located in the state of South Dakota. With a population of 644 people and just one neighborhood, Alexandria is the 94th largest community in South Dakota. Alexandria has a large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic cities in the country.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some cities, Alexandria isn’t mainly white- or blue-collar. Instead, the most prevalent occupations for people in Alexandria are a mix of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Alexandria is a city of sales and office workers, service providers, and professionals. There are especially a lot of people living in Alexandria who work in sales jobs (18.01%), office and administrative support (12.73%), and healthcare suport services (8.39%).

Of important note, Alexandria is also a city of artists. Alexandria has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Alexandria’s character.

Telecommuters are a relatively large percentage of the workforce: 12.58% of people work from home. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce it is high relative to the nation. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Setting & Lifestyle

Because of many things, Alexandria is a great place for families with children to consider. First of all, many other families with children live here, making Alexandria a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families, as well as find family-oriented services and community. The city’s good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic values. With regard to real estate, Alexandria has a high rate of owner-occupied single family homes, which tends to reflect stability in the local community. Finally, Alexandria’s overall crime rate ranks among the lowest in the country, making it one of the safest places to raise a family.

Compared to the rest of the country, citizens of Alexandria spend much less time in their cars: on average, their commute to work is only 19.09 minutes. This also means that noise and pollution levels in the city are less than they would otherwise be.

Being a small city, Alexandria does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.

Alexandria Demographics

The citizens of Alexandria are slightly better educated than the national average of 21.84% for all cities and towns, with 21.85% of adults in Alexandria having a bachelor's degree or advanced degree.

The per capita income in Alexandria in 2018 was $21,592, which is low income relative to South Dakota, and lower middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $86,368 for a family of four. However, Alexandria contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

The people who call Alexandria home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Alexandria residents report their race to be White. Important ancestries of people in Alexandria include German, Irish, Norwegian, Dutch, and Welsh.

The most common language spoken in Alexandria is English. Other important languages spoken here include Italian and Polish.
