Wasco Profile

Overview

Wasco is a tiny city located in the state of Oregon. With a population of 395 people and just one neighborhood, Wasco is the 199th largest community in Oregon. Wasco has a large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic cities in the country.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some cities where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Wasco is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Wasco is a city of managers, sales and office workers, and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Wasco who work in management occupations (16.54%), sales jobs (10.24%), and office and administrative support (9.45%).

Telecommuters are a relatively large percentage of the workforce: 9.45% of people work from home. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce it is high relative to the nation. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Setting & Lifestyle

Wasco’s overall crime rate ranks among the lowest in the nation, making it a very safe place to live.

The city is relatively quiet, having a combination of lower population density and few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. For example, Wasco has relatively fewer families with younger children, and/or college students. Combined, this makes Wasco a pretty quiet place to live overall. If you like quiet, you will probably enjoy it here.

Wasco is very much a car-oriented city. This is because the population of Wasco isn't large enough or dense enough to support an extensive public transit system. It has a lot of rural roads, and the distance between houses can be quite large, which together tends to discourage walking and bicycling to work. 75.65% of residents commute to work in their own car (and the drive is typically to a job out of town). People also tend to drive out of town for other services as well, such as shopping, doctors appointments, and more.

Being a small city, Wasco does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.

Wasco Demographics

In terms of college education, the citizens of Wasco rank slightly lower than the national average. 14.14% of adults 25 and older in Wasco have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree, while 21.84% of adults have a 4-year degree or higher in the average American community.

The per capita income in Wasco in 2010 was $35,431, which is wealthy relative to Oregon and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $141,724 for a family of four. However, Wasco contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

The people who call Wasco home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Wasco residents report their race to be White, followed by Native American. Important ancestries of people in Wasco include English, Irish, Scottish, and French .

The most common language spoken in Wasco is English. Other important languages spoken here include Italian and Native American languages.
