Plandome Profile

Overview

Plandome is a very small coastal village (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of New York. With a population of 1,405 people and just one neighborhood, Plandome is the 672nd largest community in New York. Plandome has a large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic villages in the country.

Plandome home prices are not only among the most expensive in New York, but Plandome real estate also consistently ranks among the most expensive in America.

Occupations and Workforce

Plandome is a decidedly white-collar village, with fully 95.73% of the workforce employed in white-collar jobs, well above the national average. Overall, Plandome is a village of managers, sales and office workers, and professionals. There are especially a lot of people living in Plandome who work in management occupations (25.30%), sales jobs (24.62%), and business and financial occupations (11.28%).

Setting & Lifestyle

In addition, Plandome is home to many people who could be described as "urban sophisticates", which are people who are not only wealthy and employed in professional occupations, but highly educated to boot. Urban sophisticates have urbane tastes - whether they reside in a big or small city, a suburb, or a little town. Urban sophisticates support bookstores, quality clothing stores, enjoy luxury travel, and in big cities, they are truly the patrons of the arts, attending and supporting institutions such as opera, symphony, ballet, and theatre.

Plandome is a good choice for families with children because of several factors. Many other families with children live here, making it a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families. The village’s good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic success. Many people own their own single-family homes, providing areas for children to play and stability in the community. Finally, Plandome’s overall crime rate ranks among the lowest in the country, making it one of the safest places to raise a family.

Plandome is also nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Such areas are often places that visitors and locals go for waterfront activities or taking in the scenery.

One downside of living in Plandome, however, is that residents on average have to contend with a long commute, spending on average 37.76 minutes every day commuting to work. However, local public transit is widely used. For those who would prefer to avoid driving entirely and leave their car at home, it may be an option to use the transit instead.

Even though Plandome is a smaller village, it has many people who hop on public transportation – mostly the train for their daily commute to work. Typically, these people are commuting to good jobs in the surrounding cities.

Plandome Demographics

Do you have a 4-year college degree or graduate degree? If so, you may feel right at home in Plandome. 80.73% of adults here have a 4-year degree or graduate degree, whereas the national average for all cities and towns is just 21.84%.

The per capita income in Plandome in 2010 was $122,361, which is wealthy relative to New York and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $489,444 for a family of four.

The people who call Plandome home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Plandome residents report their race to be White, followed by Asian. Important ancestries of people in Plandome include Italian, German, English, and Polish.

The most common language spoken in Plandome is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and Greek.
