West Cape May Profile

Overview

West Cape May is a very small coastal borough (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of New Jersey. With a population of 1,016 people and just one neighborhood, West Cape May is the 470th largest community in New Jersey.

Housing costs in West Cape May are among some of the highest in the nation, although real estate prices here don't compare to real estate prices in the most expensive communities in New Jersey.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some boroughs where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, West Cape May is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, West Cape May is a borough of service providers, sales and office workers, and professionals. There are especially a lot of people living in West Cape May who work in food service (19.62%), sales jobs (15.32%), and management occupations (9.95%).

Setting & Lifestyle

Another notable thing is that West Cape May is an extremely popular vacation destination. A significant portion of the population is seasonal. During the vacation season, the borough experiences a large influx of people who take up residence in second homes they own in the area. As the vacation season ends, the population drops again, leaving behind a substantially quieter and smaller borough.

Residents will find that the borough is relatively quiet. This is because it is not over-populated, and it has fewer college students, renters, and young children - all of whom can be noisy at times. So, if you're looking for a relatively peaceful place to live, West Cape May is worth considering.

One of the nice things about West Cape May is that it is nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities.

West Cape May Demographics

The citizens of West Cape May are very well educated compared to the average community in the nation: 35.35% of adults in West Cape May have a bachelor's degree or even advanced degree.

The per capita income in West Cape May in 2010 was $31,997, which is lower middle income relative to New Jersey, and wealthy relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $127,988 for a family of four. However, West Cape May contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

West Cape May is a somewhat ethnically-diverse borough. The people who call West Cape May home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of West Cape May residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. West Cape May also has a sizeable Hispanic population (people of Hispanic origin can be of any race). People of Hispanic or Latino origin account for 10.64% of the borough’s residents. Important ancestries of people in West Cape May include German, Irish, Italian, and Polish.
