Third Lake Profile

Overview

Third Lake is a very small village located in the state of Illinois. With a population of 1,189 people and just one neighborhood, Third Lake is the 603rd largest community in Illinois.

Third Lake real estate is some of the most expensive in Illinois, although Third Lake house values don't compare to the most expensive real estate in the U.S.

Occupations and Workforce

Third Lake is a decidedly white-collar village, with fully 92.33% of the workforce employed in white-collar jobs, well above the national average. Overall, Third Lake is a village of professionals, managers, and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Third Lake who work in management occupations (15.80%), teaching (14.88%), and office and administrative support (11.96%).

Also of interest is that Third Lake has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

Of important note, Third Lake is also a village of artists. Third Lake has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Third Lake’s character.

One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their home: 8.15% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Setting & Lifestyle

Because of many things, Third Lake is a great place for families with children to consider. First of all, many other families with children live here, making Third Lake a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families, as well as find family-oriented services and community. The village’s good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic values. With regard to real estate, Third Lake has a high rate of owner-occupied single family homes, which tends to reflect stability in the local community. Finally, Third Lake’s overall crime rate is lower than average for the country.

One downside of living in Third Lake, however, is that residents on average have to contend with a long commute, spending on average 31.57 minutes every day commuting to work. However, local public transit is widely used. For those who would prefer to avoid driving entirely and leave their car at home, it may be an option to use the transit instead.

In Third Lake, a lot of people use the train to get to work every day though Third Lake is a relatively small village. Those that ride the train are primarily traveling out of town to good jobs in other cities.

Third Lake Demographics

If knowledge is power, Third Lake is a pretty powerful place. 62.76% of the adults in Third Lake have earned a 4-year college degree, masters degree, MD, law degree, or even PhD. Compare that to the national average of 21.84% for all cities and towns.

The per capita income in Third Lake in 2010 was $56,247, which is wealthy relative to Illinois and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $224,988 for a family of four.

The people who call Third Lake home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Third Lake residents report their race to be White, followed by Asian. Important ancestries of people in Third Lake include Irish, Polish, Italian, and English.

The most common language spoken in Third Lake is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and Other Indo-European.
