Fairmount Profile

Overview

Fairmount is a tiny village located in the state of Illinois. With a population of 620 people and just one neighborhood, Fairmount is the 718th largest community in Illinois. Fairmount has an unusually large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic villages.

Occupations and Workforce

Because occupations involving physical labor dominate the local economy, Fairmount is generally considered to be a blue-collar town. 37.14% of the Fairmount workforce is employed in blue-collar occupations, compared to the national average of 27.7%. Overall, Fairmount is a village of sales and office workers, construction workers and builders, and professionals. There are especially a lot of people living in Fairmount who work in office and administrative support (15.10%), sales jobs (8.98%), and teaching (7.35%).

Setting & Lifestyle

The overall crime rate in Fairmount is one of the lowest in the US. This makes it one of the safer places to live in the country in terms of crime.

It is a fairly quiet village because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Fairmount has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Fairmount has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Fairmount than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Fairmount may be for you.

Fairmount is a small village, and as such doesn't have a public transit system that people use to get to and from their jobs every day.

Fairmount Demographics

The citizens of Fairmount have a very low rate of college education: just 7.14% of people over 25 have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree, compared to a national average of 21.84% for all cities.

The per capita income in Fairmount in 2010 was $21,793, which is lower middle income relative to Illinois, and middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $87,172 for a family of four.

The people who call Fairmount home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Fairmount residents report their race to be White. Important ancestries of people in Fairmount include German, Irish, Dutch, and Scottish.

The most common language spoken in Fairmount is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and German.
