Amana Profile

Overview

Amana is a tiny town located in the state of Iowa. With a population of 438 people and just one neighborhood, Amana is the 382nd largest community in Iowa. Amana has an unusually large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic towns.

Amana real estate is some of the most expensive in Iowa, although Amana house values don't compare to the most expensive real estate in the U.S.

Occupations and Workforce

Amana is a decidedly white-collar town, with fully 89.19% of the workforce employed in white-collar jobs, well above the national average. Overall, Amana is a town of professionals, sales and office workers, and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Amana who work in sales jobs (14.05%), food service (12.43%), and management occupations (12.43%).

Also of interest is that Amana has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

Setting & Lifestyle

In addition, Amana is home to many people who could be described as "urban sophisticates". Urban sophisticates are people who are both educated and wealthy, and thus tend to be older, richer, and more established than young professionals. "Urban sophisticates" is not just about being educated and well-off financially: it is a point of view and state of mind, one that you might call 'urbaneness'. But such people can and do regularly live in small towns, suburbs and rural areas, as well as in big cities. They read, support the arts and high-end shops, and love travel.

Because of many things, Amana is a very good place for families to consider. With an enviable combination of good schools, low crime, college-educated neighbors who tend to support education because of their own experiences, and a high rate of home ownership in predominantly single-family properties, Amana really has some of the features that families look for when choosing a good community to raise children. Is Amana perfect? Of course not, and if you like frenetic nightlife, it will be far from your cup of tea. But overall this is a solid community, with many things to recommend it as a family-friendly place to live.

The town is relatively quiet, having a combination of lower population density and few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. For example, Amana has relatively fewer families with younger children, and/or college students. Combined, this makes Amana a pretty quiet place to live overall. If you like quiet, you will probably enjoy it here.

Compared to the rest of the country, citizens of Amana spend much less time in their cars: on average, their commute to work is only 17.44 minutes. This also means that noise and pollution levels in the town are less than they would otherwise be.

As is often the case in a small town, Amana doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.

Amana Demographics

The citizens of Amana are among the most well-educated in the nation: 42.86% of adults in Amana have a bachelor's degree or even advanced degree, whereas the average US city has 21.84% holding at least a bachelor's degree.

The per capita income in Amana in 2010 was $33,629, which is wealthy relative to Iowa and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $134,516 for a family of four.

The people who call Amana home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Amana residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Important ancestries of people in Amana include Irish, Norwegian, Welsh, and Dutch.

The most common language spoken in Amana is English. Other important languages spoken here include German and Spanish.
