Black Hawk Profile

Overview

Black Hawk is a tiny city located in the state of Colorado. With a population of 128 people and just one neighborhood, Black Hawk is the 226th largest community in Colorado. Much of the housing stock in Black Hawk was built prior to World War II, making it one of the older and more historic cities in the country.

Housing costs in Black Hawk are among some of the highest in the nation, although real estate prices here don't compare to real estate prices in the most expensive communities in Colorado.

Occupations and Workforce

Black Hawk is a decidedly white-collar city, with fully 92.71% of the workforce employed in white-collar jobs, well above the national average. Overall, Black Hawk is a city of service providers, sales and office workers, and transportation and shipping workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Black Hawk who work in food service (37.50%), personal care services (25.00%), and maintenance occupations (14.58%).

Setting & Lifestyle

It is a fairly quiet city because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Black Hawk has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Black Hawk has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Black Hawk than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Black Hawk may be for you.

Compared to the rest of the country, citizens of Black Hawk spend much less time in their cars: on average, their commute to work is only 10.30 minutes. This also means that noise and pollution levels in the city are less than they would otherwise be.

Despite the fact that it is a small city, Black Hawk has quite a few people who take public transportation – mostly the bus - for their daily commute to work. This helps to fill a real need in the city for affordable transportation.

Black Hawk Demographics

In terms of college education, Black Hawk ranks among the least educated cities in the nation, as only 1.68% of people over 25 have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree.

The per capita income in Black Hawk in 2018 was $22,547, which is lower middle income relative to Colorado and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $90,188 for a family of four.

Black Hawk is an extremely ethnically-diverse city. The people who call Black Hawk home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Black Hawk residents report their race to be White. Black Hawk also has a sizeable Hispanic population (people of Hispanic origin can be of any race). People of Hispanic or Latino origin account for 39.13% of the city’s residents. Important ancestries of people in Black Hawk include German, Irish, Italian, English, and French.

The most common language spoken in Black Hawk is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and Italian.
