Living in Gettysburg

Gettysburg is a somewhat small borough located in the state of Pennsylvania. With a population of 8,558 people and seven associated neighborhoods, Gettysburg is the 184th largest community in Pennsylvania. Gettysburg has a large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic boroughs in the country.

Telecommuters are a relatively large percentage of the workforce: 8.17% of people work from home. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce it is high relative to the nation. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Gettysburg is a small town where college students really create the town feel and character. So many small towns have lost population over the last 20-30 years that having the local college presence in the Gettysburg area, with all of the energy of the students filling area dorms and apartments each fall, really helps Gettysburg maintain a good economy.

Compared to the rest of the country, citizens of Gettysburg spend much less time in their cars: on average, their commute to work is only 17.96 minutes. This also means that noise and pollution levels in the borough are less than they would otherwise be.

The education level of Gettysburg ranks among the highest in the nation. Of the 25-and-older adult population in Gettysburg, 41.28% have at least a bachelor's degree. The typical US community has just 21.84% of its adults holding a bachelor's degree or graduate degree.

The per capita income in Gettysburg in 2018 was $29,948, which is lower middle income relative to Pennsylvania, and middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $119,792 for a family of four. However, Gettysburg contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

Gettysburg is a very ethnically-diverse borough. The people who call Gettysburg home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups.
