Lake Mohegan Profile

Overview

Lake Mohegan is a somewhat small town located in the state of New York. With a population of 6,159 people and just one neighborhood, Lake Mohegan is the 277th largest community in New York.

Housing costs in Lake Mohegan are among some of the highest in the nation, although real estate prices here don't compare to real estate prices in the most expensive communities in New York.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Lake Mohegan is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Lake Mohegan is a town of sales and office workers, professionals, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Lake Mohegan who work in office and administrative support (14.62%), management occupations (11.43%), and sales jobs (10.46%).

Of important note, Lake Mohegan is also a town of artists. Lake Mohegan has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Lake Mohegan’s character.

Setting & Lifestyle

Because of many things, Lake Mohegan is a very good place for families to consider. With an enviable combination of good schools, low crime, college-educated neighbors who tend to support education because of their own experiences, and a high rate of home ownership in predominantly single-family properties, Lake Mohegan really has some of the features that families look for when choosing a good community to raise children. Is Lake Mohegan perfect? Of course not, and if you like frenetic nightlife, it will be far from your cup of tea. But overall this is a solid community, with many things to recommend it as a family-friendly place to live.

One downside of living in Lake Mohegan, however, is that residents on average have to contend with a long commute, spending on average 34.61 minutes every day commuting to work. However, local public transit is widely used. For those who would prefer to avoid driving entirely and leave their car at home, it may be an option to use the transit instead.

In Lake Mohegan, a lot of people use the train to get to work every day though Lake Mohegan is a relatively small town. Those that ride the train are primarily traveling out of town to good jobs in other cities.

Lake Mohegan Demographics

The education level of Lake Mohegan ranks among the highest in the nation. Of the 25-and-older adult population in Lake Mohegan, 44.65% have at least a bachelor's degree. The typical US community has just 21.84% of its adults holding a bachelor's degree or graduate degree.

The per capita income in Lake Mohegan in 2010 was $40,182, which is upper middle income relative to New York, and wealthy relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $160,728 for a family of four.
