Canaan is a very small town located in the state of New York. With a population of 1,683 people and just one neighborhood, Canaan is the 623rd largest community in New York. Canaan has a large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic towns in the country.
Occupations and Workforce
Canaan is neither predominantly blue-collar nor white-collar, instead having a mixed workforce of both blue-collar and white-collar jobs. Overall, Canaan is a town of professionals, sales and office workers and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Canaan who work in management occupations (10.68%), sales jobs (10.11%) and office and administrative support (9.54%).
Of important note, Canaan is also a town of artists. Canaan has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Canaan’s character.
Also of interest is that Canaan has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.
A relatively large number of people in Canaan telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 12.01% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
Setting & Lifestyle
Another notable thing is that Canaan is a major vacation destination. Much of the town’s population is seasonal: many people own second homes and only live there part-time, during the vacation season. The effect on the local economy is that many of the businesses are dependent on tourist dollars, and may operate only during the high season. As the vacation season ends, Canaan’s population drops significantly, such that year-round residents will notice that the city is a much quieter place to live.
In addition, Canaan is home to many people who could be described as "urban sophisticates". Urban sophisticates are educated, wealthy, executives and professionals, who have urbane tastes in books, food, and travel, whether they actually live in a big city, or choose to reside in a small town. In big or medium-sized cities, urban sophisticates tend to frequent art institutions such as opera, symphonies, ballet, live theatre, and museums.
The town is relatively quiet, having a combination of lower population density and few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. For example, Canaan has relatively fewer families with younger children, and/or college students. Combined, this makes Canaan a pretty quiet place to live overall. If you like quiet, you will probably enjoy it here.
In Canaan, however, the average commute to work is quite long. On average, people spend 30.46 minutes each day getting to work, which is significantly higher than the national average.
