Overview

Troy is a tiny city located in the state of Montana. With a population of 880 people and just one neighborhood, Troy is the 103rd largest community in Montana. Troy has a large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic cities in the country.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some cities where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Troy is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Troy is a city of service providers, professionals, and construction workers and builders. There are especially a lot of people living in Troy who work in teaching (14.00%), food service (13.67%), and office and administrative support (11.00%).

Also of interest is that Troy has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

Of important note, Troy is also a city of artists. Troy has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Troy’s character.

A relatively large number of people in Troy telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 12.04% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Setting & Lifestyle

Residents will find that the city is relatively quiet. This is because it is not over-populated, and it has fewer college students, renters, and young children - all of whom can be noisy at times. So, if you're looking for a relatively peaceful place to live, Troy is worth considering.

As is often the case in a small city, Troy doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.

Demographics

In Troy, just 10.15% of people have at least a bachelor's degree, which is quite a bit lower than the national average for cities and towns of 21.84%.

The per capita income in Troy in 2018 was $20,956, which is low income relative to Montana and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $83,824 for a family of four. However, Troy contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

The people who call Troy home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Troy residents report their race to be White, followed by Native Hawaiian. Important ancestries of people in Troy include German, Italian, English, Irish, and Norwegian.

The most common language spoken in Troy is English. Other important languages spoken here include Polish and Spanish.

Notable & Unique Neighborhood Characteristics

The way a neighborhood looks and feels when you walk or drive around it, from its setting, its buildings, and its flavor, can make all the difference. This neighborhood has some really cool things about the way it looks and feels as revealed by NeighborhoodScout's exclusive research. This might include anything from the housing stock to the types of households living here to how people get around.

Real Estate

Unpopulated, and rural, the neighborhood is one of the least crowded neighborhoods in all of America. If you like open space, no traffic, and lots of room, this neighborhood may be just what you are looking for. According to NeighborhoodScout's leading research, this neighborhood is less densely populated than 98.7% of the neighborhoods in America.

In addition, despite all of the residential real estate here in the neighborhood, NeighborhoodScout has discovered that much of it is vacant. In resort or second-home vacation areas, this naturally occurs because homes and apartments are seasonally occupied, and empty for a portion of the year. In non-vacation or resort areas, however, this can be an indicator of property abandonment or a weak real estate market. The vacancy rate here is 31.7%, which is higher than 95.4% of all U.S. neighborhoods.

Diversity

Did you know that the neighborhood has more Lithuanian and Norwegian ancestry people living in it than nearly any neighborhood in America? It's true! In fact, 1.6% of this neighborhood's residents have Lithuanian ancestry and 9.1% have Norwegian ancestry.

The Neighbors

There are two complementary measures for understanding the income of a neighborhood's residents: the average and the extremes. While a neighborhood may be relatively wealthy overall, it is equally important to understand the rate of people - particularly children - who are living at or below the federal poverty line, which is extremely low income. Some neighborhoods with a lower average income may actually have a lower childhood poverty rate than another with a higher average income, and this helps us understand the conditions and character of a neighborhood.

The neighbors in the neighborhood in Troy are low income, making it among the lowest income neighborhoods in America. NeighborhoodScout's research shows that this neighborhood has an income lower than 89.8% of U.S. neighborhoods. With 43.3% of the children here below the federal poverty line, this neighborhood has a higher rate of childhood poverty than 91.0% of U.S. neighborhoods.

A neighborhood is far different if it is dominated by enlisted military personnel rather than people who earn their living by farming. It is also different if most of the neighbors are clerical support or managers. What is wonderful is the sheer diversity of neighborhoods, allowing you to find the type that fits your lifestyle and aspirations.

In the neighborhood, 33.5% of the working population is employed in executive, management, and professional occupations. The second most important occupational group in this neighborhood is manufacturing and laborer occupations, with 27.4% of the residents employed. Other residents here are employed in sales and service jobs, from major sales accounts, to working in fast food restaurants (24.5%), and 14.0% in clerical, assistant, and tech support occupations.

Languages

The most common language spoken in the neighborhood is English, spoken by 97.4% of households.

Ethnicity / Ancestry

Culture is the shared learned behavior of peoples. Undeniably, different ethnicities and ancestries have different cultural traditions, and as a result, neighborhoods with concentrations of residents of one or another ethnicities or ancestries will express those cultures. It is what makes the North End in Boston so fun to visit for the Italian restaurants, bakeries, culture, and charm, and similarly, why people enjoy visiting Chinatown in San Francisco.

In the neighborhood in Troy, MT, residents most commonly identify their ethnicity or ancestry as German (20.3%). There are also a number of people of Irish ancestry (14.1%), and residents who report English roots (11.5%), and some of the residents are also of Norwegian ancestry (9.1%), along with some Italian ancestry residents (7.5%), among others.

Getting to Work

Even if your neighborhood is walkable, you may still have to drive to your place of work. Some neighborhoods are located where many can get to work in just a few minutes, while others are located such that most residents have a long and arduous commute. The greatest number of commuters in neighborhood spend under 15 minutes commuting one-way to work (32.7% of working residents), one of the shortest commutes across America.

Here most residents (77.2%) drive alone in a private automobile to get to work. In addition, quite a number also carpool with coworkers, friends, or neighbors to get to work (10.2%) . In a neighborhood like this, as in most of the nation, many residents find owning a car useful for getting to work.
