Thebes Profile

Overview

Thebes is a tiny village located in the state of Illinois. With a population of 375 people and just one neighborhood, Thebes is the 765th largest community in Illinois.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some villages where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Thebes is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Thebes is a village of service providers, production and manufacturing workers, and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Thebes who work in food service (35.20%), office and administrative support (12.24%), and healthcare suport services (5.61%).

Setting & Lifestyle

Because there are quite a few people attending college in Thebes, it is thought of as a college town. To the benefit of the many students in the area, Thebes provides a number of services, amenities and opportunities geared towards their needs and activities.

The overall crime rate in Thebes is one of the lowest in the US. This makes it one of the safer places to live in the country in terms of crime.

It is a fairly quiet village because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Thebes has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Thebes has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Thebes than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Thebes may be for you.

Thebes is a small village, and as such doesn't have a public transit system that people use to get to and from their jobs every day.

Thebes Demographics

The population of Thebes has one of the lowest overall levels of education in the country: only 5.44% of people over 25 hold a college degree. The national average for all municipalities is 21.84%.

The per capita income in Thebes in 2010 was $9,408, which is low income relative to Illinois and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $37,632 for a family of four. Thebes also has one of the higher rates of people living in poverty in the nation, with 38.28% of its population below the federal poverty line.

Thebes is an extremely ethnically-diverse village. The people who call Thebes home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Thebes residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Important ancestries of people in Thebes include Irish, Italian, Dutch, and Scots-Irish.

The most common language spoken in Thebes is English. Other important languages spoken here include Italian and Japanese.
