Ocean View is a somewhat small coastal town (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of Hawaii. With a population of 8,867 people and just one neighborhood, Ocean View is the 21st largest community in Hawaii.
Occupations and Workforce
Ocean View is neither predominantly blue-collar nor white-collar, instead having a mixed workforce of both blue-collar and white-collar jobs. Overall, Ocean View is a town of service providers, sales and office workers and professionals. There are especially a lot of people living in Ocean View who work in management occupations (11.49%), office and administrative support (11.15%) and maintenance occupations (9.71%).
Another important characteristic of Ocean View is that a lot of people work in agricultural jobs, especially compared to most other communities in America, and there are quite a number of farms in town.
One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their home: 16.63% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
Setting & Lifestyle
It is a fairly quiet town because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Ocean View has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Ocean View has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Ocean View than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Ocean View may be for you.
One of the nice things about Ocean View is that it is nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities.
In Ocean View, however, the average commute to work is quite long. On average, people spend 38.68 minutes each day getting to work, which is significantly higher than the national average. One bright side is that local public transit is widely used, so it may be an option to avoid the headache of driving in the heavy traffic by leaving the car at home and taking transit.
Despite being a small town, Ocean View has a lot of people using the bus to get to and from work every day. Most of these people on the bus are using it to get to good jobs in other cities.
