Mims is a somewhat small coastal town (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of Florida. With a population of 7,162 people and three constituent neighborhoods, Mims is the 235th largest community in Florida.
Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Mims is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Mims is a town of sales and office workers, professionals and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Mims who work in office and administrative support (14.93%), sales jobs (12.91%) and management occupations (6.10%).
Also of interest is that Mims has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.
It is a fairly quiet town because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Mims has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Mims has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Mims than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Mims may be for you.
Mims is also nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Such areas are often places that visitors and locals go for waterfront activities or taking in the scenery.
In Mims, however, the average commute to work is quite long. On average, people spend 32.06 minutes each day getting to work, which is significantly higher than the national average.
Being a small town, Mims does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.
In terms of college education, the citizens of Mims rank slightly lower than the national average. 16.45% of adults 25 and older in Mims have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree, while 21.84% of adults have a 4-year degree or higher in the average American community.
The per capita income in Mims in 2010 was $22,712, which is middle income relative to Florida and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $90,848 for a family of four. However, Mims contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.
Mims is a somewhat ethnically-diverse town. The people who call Mims home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Mims residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Important ancestries of people in Mims include German, English, Irish, French, Italian and Scottish.
The most common language spoken in Mims is English. Some people also speak Spanish.
