Sylmar Profile

Overview

Sylmar is a tiny town located in the state of California. With a population of 563 people and just one neighborhood, Sylmar is the 737th largest community in California.

Housing costs in Sylmar are among some of the highest in the nation, although real estate prices here don't compare to real estate prices in the most expensive communities in California.

Occupations and Workforce

Sylmar is neither predominantly blue-collar nor white-collar, instead having a mixed workforce of both blue-collar and white-collar jobs. Overall, Sylmar is a town of service providers, sales and office workers, and professionals. There are especially a lot of people living in Sylmar who work in food service (13.25%), sales jobs (11.11%), and management occupations (10.68%).

Of important note, Sylmar is also a town of artists. Sylmar has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Sylmar’s character.

Setting & Lifestyle

Because there are quite a few people attending college in Sylmar, it is thought of as a college town. To the benefit of the many students in the area, Sylmar provides a number of services, amenities and opportunities geared towards their needs and activities.

Residents will find that the town is relatively quiet. This is because it is not over-populated, and it has fewer college students, renters, and young children - all of whom can be noisy at times. So, if you're looking for a relatively peaceful place to live, Sylmar is worth considering.

In Sylmar, however, the average commute to work is quite long. On average, people spend 42.20 minutes each day getting to work, which is significantly higher than the national average. One bright side is that local public transit is widely used, so it may be an option to avoid the headache of driving in the heavy traffic by leaving the car at home and taking transit.

Despite being a small town, Sylmar has a lot of people using the bus to get to and from work every day. Most of these people on the bus are using it to get to good jobs in other cities.

Sylmar Demographics

The education level of Sylmar citizens is substantially higher than the typical US community, as 30.58% of adults in Sylmar have at least a bachelor's degree.

The per capita income in Sylmar in 2010 was $46,404, which is wealthy relative to California and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $185,616 for a family of four. However, Sylmar contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

Sylmar is an extremely ethnically-diverse town. The people who call Sylmar home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups.
