Monte Rio is a very small town located in the state of California. With a population of 1,189 people and just one neighborhood, Monte Rio is the 697th largest community in California. Much of the housing stock in Monte Rio was built prior to World War II, making it one of the older and more historic towns in the country.
Real Estate Prices
Housing costs in Monte Rio are among some of the highest in the nation, although real estate prices here don't compare to real estate prices in the most expensive communities in California.
Occupations and Workforce
Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Monte Rio is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Monte Rio is a town of sales and office workers, professionals and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Monte Rio who work in sales jobs (19.44%), management occupations (13.89%) and teaching (9.60%).
Of important note, Monte Rio is also a town of artists. Monte Rio has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Monte Rio’s character.
Setting & Lifestyle
Another notable thing is that Monte Rio is an extremely popular vacation destination. A significant portion of the population is seasonal. During the vacation season, the town experiences a large influx of people who take up residence in second homes they own in the area. As the vacation season ends, the population drops again, leaving behind a substantially quieter and smaller town.
One downside of living in Monte Rio, however, is that residents on average have to contend with a long commute, spending on average 36.48 minutes every day commuting to work. However, local public transit is widely used. For those who would prefer to avoid driving entirely and leave their car at home, it may be an option to use the transit instead.
Despite the fact that it is a small town, Monte Rio has quite a few people who take public transportation – mostly the bus - for their daily commute to work. This helps to fill a real need in the town for affordable transportation.
