Capitola is a somewhat small coastal city (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of California. With a population of 10,146 people and three constituent neighborhoods, Capitola is the 418th largest community in California.
Housing costs in Capitola are among some of the highest in the nation, although real estate prices here don't compare to real estate prices in the most expensive communities in California.
Capitola is a decidedly white-collar city, with fully 88.85% of the workforce employed in white-collar jobs, well above the national average. Overall, Capitola is a city of professionals, sales and office workers and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Capitola who work in sales jobs (18.41%), management occupations (12.78%) and food service (9.45%).
Also of interest is that Capitola has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.
Of important note, Capitola is also a city of artists. Capitola has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Capitola’s character.
One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their home: 10.54% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
Capitola is also nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Such areas are often places that visitors and locals go for waterfront activities or taking in the scenery.
The education level of Capitola citizens is very high relative to the national average among all cities (21.84%): 38.30% of adults in Capitola have a bachelor's degree or even advanced degree.
The per capita income in Capitola in 2010 was $37,940, which is upper middle income relative to California, and wealthy relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $151,760 for a family of four. However, Capitola contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.
Capitola is a somewhat ethnically-diverse city. The people who call Capitola home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Capitola residents report their race to be White, followed by Asian. Capitola also has a sizeable Hispanic population (people of Hispanic origin can be of any race). People of Hispanic or Latino origin account for 22.26% of the city’s residents. Important ancestries of people in Capitola include German, English, Irish, Italian, French and European.
The most common language spoken in Capitola is English. Some people also speak Spanish.
